“A good Jack makes a great gelding”. Maybe you have heard that line before. It’s absolutely true and they are able to enjoy life so much more without the hormones. However, from a breeders standpoint, you have to have a jack to have foals. Your jack should be excellent in all qualities, physical, temperamental, and fertile.
My favorite little jack Adagio was not producing foals for me like I’d hoped. After missing an entire foal crop this spring, I put him on every supplement I could think of that might help give him a boost & decided to do a semen evaluation once breeding season commenced. He tested very weak. The vet and I spoke at length about options, but rather than throw more time and money into extensive testing that may or may not give conclusive results, we decided to geld him and find a replacement jack.
There is always a small risk with any surgical procedure but with a skilled vet and good post-op care, risk is minimal. Things you can expect are swelling and minor drainage. These are resolved by lots of walking and gentle cold hosing a few times a day.
Once Adagio is all healed up and his hormones have dropped, (allow roughly one month per year of age) he will move in with my other geldings and begin training. He enjoys going to shows so he will make a wonderful performance animal. He will be healthier and happier because of our decision.
